When noon rolls around, Marta slaps a “Back at 1” sticky on her monitor then strolls across the street to La Brea Tarpits. On view today are hordes of schoolchildren streaming from yellow buses like ants abandoning their colony. Paonia, Colorado

It was the place they stopped driving. A town on their way somewhere, spread out and green below the mountains. She can’t recall where they were going, what they were looking for, following the highway along a stream cut through red rock. Sand slipped through their fingers and they were tired.
